A Little Word on the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival

Melanie from Little Word Bites had a short review about us and NYCVFF!

Lines and biodegradable droppings of miniature spoons and cups always pointed toward delicious foods. Just beyond - sprout salads and seitan bacon. Lines and biodegradable droppings of miniature spoons and cups always pointed toward delicious foods. Just beyond – sprout salads and seitan bacon.

New York City experienced its fourth vegetarian and vegan nirvana this month, when the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival took over the Metropolitan Pavilion on March 1 and 2nd.

Filling two floors with delicious and innovative vendors, multiple stages featuring guest speakers and culinary demonstrations, and active members of the vegetarian community, the festival was one of the city’s events I have looked most forward to since arriving.

As expected, there were a handful of familiar brands – Taft Foodmasters had a lavish display for their vegan seitan gyro, and Gardein was cooking up hundreds of samples of their Crispy Mandarin Orange Chick’n (which was regrettably too orange-y, not at all crispy- and with a texture not unlike the packaging itself).

But, as is always the case…

It’s Kale Time

Hi vegheads,

Many apologies for the late announcement of the March roll and piece on the blog. The roll and piece have been in our stores for a few days already. We were just so busy with the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival last weekend. To sum everything up shortly: It was an amazing event with amazing people! We were so overwhelmed with all the positive feedback and support from everyone. Our entire menu was sold out both days! We can’t wait for next year’s event. Shout out to the organizers who put together a very well-planned event.

Back to our roll and piece announcement, if you haven’t had a chance to stop by, here they are. Spoiler alert: There’s a kale theme going on here.

For the Roll of the Month, we have black rice, dehydrated kale, roasted sunchoke, and marinated carrots. The roll is topped with Cajun kale chip and sweet green peas mint sauce. The kale chip has a tiny bit of heat just enough to spice it up.

If you’re not familiar with sunchoke, this root vegetable looks like ginger with the taste of potato. Sunchoke (a.k.a Jerusalem artichoke) is a great food to prevent colon cancer. Other than that, it helps lower blood pressure and decrease blood cholesterol. There are tons of health benefits of these little guys that we will cover in our future blog posts. Stay tuned for more!

Ingredients of this lovely piece are noted in the photo! And as always, deliciousness is guaranteed.

Now that you know what we have for March, come by our stores and check them out! They will be in store until the end of month.

The Mobile Vegans!

Hey friends,

Long time no see. We hope you’re still doing great in this freezing snowy winter. Just bundle up, drink water, and patiently wait until Spring!

Anyhow, as the title reveals, we want to share three cool vegan apps/ websites that we’ve found recently. Hopefully, these will make you veg-life a lot easier.

  1. Is It Vegan?

Simply perfect app to use while browsing grocery stores’ shelves.  You just need to scan the UPC code on a product, this app automatically analyzes the ingredients and let you know if the product is vegan or not. There are two versions available: One is free and the full version is $4.99. A little bird also told us that 25% of profit of ad money in this app is donated to help animals.

2. Vegan Food is Everywhere.

VFE is a world map with places that have delicious vegan food. Yes, you read it right – A WORLD MAP. VFE is a crowd-sourcing website, which allows anyone to add food items to the list. Another great thing about this map is that it includes vegan dishes at regular restaurants or how to make your orders vegan. This makes easy when you dine out with non-vegans. As far as we know, this map is free and open to everyone.

3. Animal-Free.

This is a pocket guide that lists common and hidden animal ingredients. Animal-Free is a little bit similar to Is It Vegan?, but if you really want to investigate every ingredient, this is a great tool.

Do we miss any other great apps? Let us know in the comment. We’d love to hear your suggestions!

P.S.: Don’t forget NYC Vegetarian Food Festival is next weekend  TOMORROW! 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Metropolitan Pavilion. See you there!

Out and About

Hello beloved readers!

Phew… What a busy month for us at Beyond Sushi. February has brought a series of fun events. And guess what? We’re starting March with another string of big events too!

Where have we been this month?

Last week, Chef Guy participated in Restaurant Day Study with the first graders at PS41. Running around with 20+ kids was exhausting and overwhelming, but it was probably the most fun we’ve had in a while. The best part was to promote a healthy eating habit among kids. Plus, seeing the little first graders carefully rolled their sushi and neatly packed everything home were rewarding for us.

Next event that we’ll be a part in is Social Media Week NYC. The event in fact starts today at the Highline Stage. We’ll be serving lunch on Friday with a small menu from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you’re there, make sure to stop by and say hi! Of course don’t forget to try some of our delicious sushi. Besides Beyond Sushi, few other food vendors from Chelsea Market will be there serving scrumptious breakfast and lunch too. Yummy options are endless!

Last but not least, guess what big event is back in March?!? New York City Vegetarian Food Festival is in 2 weeks! We’ll be there for the 4th year serving our sushi and other goodies. It was because of the overwhelming and positive responses from NYCVFF’s participants that encouraged us to open Beyond Sushi. With that said, we’ll be forever grateful for all their (and your) helps and supports. If you still haven’t bought your tickets yet, this is your time to do so!  Go to https://2014nycvegfoodfest.chirrpy.com and use VEGTASTIC at checkout to get 50% off your ticket. The code certainly makes this great festival affordable!

Also, the lovely ladies from NYCVFF are promoting the Veg Fest on WLNY’s Live on the Couch tomorrow morning (Tuesday 2/18) with our sushi. Tune in channel 10 or 55 (depends on your cable company) to watch! Our sushi will make an appearance at 7:45 a.m.

That’s all for this post. Hope to see you at one of those events! We’ll keep you updated for new events soon.

Until then, stay warm, drink lots of water, and take care!

We can guarantee that you won’t find the card anywhere else!

Hello February!

It’s official. The first month of January has gone in a blink of an eye. Crazy, isn’t it?

Now is the time to start a fun February with us. We have some great new things at Beyond Sushi this month for you!

First, we’re so excited and happy to introduce the new roll and piece of the month. They’re both very flavorful with a hint of curry and roasted balsamic-marinated beets (don’t like beets? this may change your mind!).

Image

The roll of the month includes black rice, chayote, avocado, roasted balsamic-marinated beets and topped with lemon-infused beluga lentils. The February roll comes with curried cauliflower purée.

Image

The piece of the month has black rice and curried cauliflower. The sauce is roasted balsamic-marinated beets. This does not only look good but also tastes delicious! It’s packed with protein from the lentils and plenty of nutrition from the beets and cauliflower.

In other news, we plan to feature and give more information about our ingredients. Therefore, we pick Beet as our Veg Star of the Month! In the next 27 days, we’ll be posting facts and interesting information about Beets on our social media pages, so keep checking on us. It’d be fun!

Last but not least, beet will be the topic for our brand new “Cooking with Beyond Sushi” YouTube series! Beets may not be the most beloved ingredients (most of us just have no clue how to deal with them), but we hope to give beets the love they deserve this month.

This is all the news for now. We don’t want you to get overwhelming. We’ll be updating the blog next week with more news at Beyond Sushi. Until then, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for more actions. Or give us a shout out on Google+ 🙂

See ya!
